Have You Been Living With Ankle Pain?

Do you have an aching ankle that makes even the simplest things difficult? Do you find yourself struggling to do things that require any kind of physical activity, such as walking, running, playing sports, or climbing stairs?

You may be suffering from chronic ankle pain.

Read on and find out about what causes chronic ankle pain and how it affects you.

We will also provide some immediate relief techniques to help get rid of the pain in your ankle right now.

Finally, we will show you how physical therapy can help get you back on your feet.

The most common causes of ankle pain

  • Sprained ankle – if your ankle twists or rolls, ligaments can tear resulting in swelling and pain.
  • High ankle sprain – damage to the high ankle ligaments on the inside of the ankle joint. Pain radiates up the ankle. Often requires crutches and taping.
  • Ankle ligament tears – can range from mild sprains to severe tears which require surgery.
  • Malleolus Fracture – a fracture of the inner bone of your ankle. Often, you can walk with an orthopedic walker boot.
  • Tendinitis – Achilles, Post Tibialis, Peroneal – this group of tendons surround the ankle and, when injured or overused, cause swelling, soreness and pain.
  • Tendon Rupture – can cause extreme pain and damage to ankle joints.
  • Calf Strain – painful, minor tears to the two muscles on the back of the leg below your knee.
  • Fracture – can range from a single break to multiple breaks in the ankle.

What can you do about ankle pain now?

If the injury occurred recently (within the past 2-3 days), it is important to control inflammation and allow for proper healing to begin. Early treatment should include rest, ice, compression, and elevation of the injured ankle.

As a result, after the acute healing phase, you can begin performing range of motion and gentle strengthening exercises for the ankle in order to restore function.

How does physical therapy help your ankle heal?

Therapy restores ankle function, improves mobility, relieves pain, and prevents or limits permanent physical disabilities in patients with injury or disease.

What if your pain never goes away?

You can see your primary care or orthopedic provider for medical evaluation.

Additionally, ask your provider if he/she believes that physical therapy would be a good option for you in order to regain function. Physical therapy can help to restore function and avoid surgery/permanent impairment from the injury.

You don’t have to live with ankle pain. It doesn’t have to be this way.
